What is MIDI? Your Guide to the Digital Music Language

If you make and record music, you should understand how this MIDI stuff works. Trust us, it's not as difficult as it sounds.

TL;DR: MIDI doesn't actually make sound. It’s a language that tells instruments how to make sound. It’s the "sheet music" for your computer that allows you to change notes, swap instruments, and fix mistakes without re-recording anything.

MIDI vs. Audio

Understanding the difference between MIDI and Audio is the first step to mastering your DAW (Digital Audio Workstation).

To understand how MIDI works, let's compare it to baking a delicious birthday cake.

  • Audio is like the finished cake. You can’t take the eggs out once it’s all assembled and baked. If you recorded a guitar part and played a wrong note, you usually have to re-make the whole thing (or bake a whole new cake).

  • MIDI is like a recipe. If you decide the cake needs more sugar (or the melody needs to be a higher pitch), you just change the instructions. The "ingredients" (aka the sounds) stay fresh, but the output changes.

How MIDI Works

When you hit a key on a MIDI controller, it sends a packet of data. That packet contains four main instructions:
