TS vs TRS Cables: What's the Difference?

TS and TRS cables look almost identical, but they can make a big difference in your music production and performance.

If you've spent any time around audio gear, you've run into 1/4" cables that look almost identical but behave very differently. The difference comes down to two little letters: TS and TRS. Knowing which is which will save you from noisy signals and a lot of head-scratching.

It's All in the Rings

The names describe the metal contacts on the plug, separated by those black insulating bands.

TS stands for Tip–Sleeve. The plug has two conductors and a single black ring near the base. The tip carries the signal, and the sleeve handles the ground.

TRS stands for Tip–Ring–Sleeve. It has three conductors and two black rings. That extra "ring" contact is what unlocks a second job for the cable.

So the quickest way to tell them apart in the wild: count the bands on the plug. One ring means TS, two rings means TRS.

What TS Cables Do

A TS cable carries an unbalanced, mono signal. This is the classic instrument cable—the one running from your guitar to your amp, or between pedals on your board. With only two conductors, it gets the job done simply and cheaply.

The catch is that unbalanced cables act like little antennas. Over long runs, they can pick up hum, buzz, and radio interference. That's why you keep guitar cables reasonably short and route them away from power supplies when you can.

What TRS Cables Do

Here's where it gets interesting. That third conductor lets a TRS cable do one of two completely different things, depending on the gear:

1. Carry a balanced mono signal. Balanced connections are the noise-fighting workhorses of the audio world. The signal is sent twice—once normal, once flipped in polarity. At the destination, the gear flips one copy back and combines them. Any interference picked up along the way gets canceled out in the process. This is why you can run balanced cables across a stage or studio without the hum you'd get from an unbalanced line.

2. Carry an unbalanced stereo signal. The same three conductors can instead split into left and right channels plus a shared ground. This is exactly how standard headphones work—one plug, two ears.

The important thing to understand is that a TRS cable doesn't "know" which job it's doing. The gear on each end decides. A TRS cable plugged into a balanced line output is balanced; the same cable in a headphone jack is stereo.

When to Use Which

A few practical rules of thumb:

  • Instruments and pedals: Use TS. Guitars, basses, and most stompbox connections are unbalanced and short, so TS is the standard.

  • Connecting line-level gear over distance: Use TRS (balanced) whenever both pieces of equipment support it (mixers, audio interfaces, studio monitors, and many synths). The noise rejection is worth it.

  • Headphones and stereo signals: Use TRS. You need that third conductor to carry both channels.

  • Insert points and Y-cables: Some gear uses a single TRS jack to send and return a signal at once (an "insert"). These usually require a special TRS-to-dual-TS cable.
